This week's "Joe Paddler" is Anna Blackburn. She is DEFINITELY a young one to watch. Meet the other "Joe Paddlers" here.
Where do you SUP the most?
Wrightsville Beach, NC
What board do you ride?
Naish Javelin LE 12'6
Hobie torque 7'11
What paddle do you use?
QuickBlade 83 flyweight
QuickBlade 66 microfly
Have you changed boards/paddles since you started? If so, why?
Yes, because I started out with a big stable board, and as I've gotten better I've changed to boards more of my size. (More narrow so my paddle technique is correct)
Where would you most like to SUP?
Best piece of SUP advice you've gotten?
REACH by ROTATING hips and shoulders.
Weirdest thing that's happened to you while SUPping?
I was paddling around harbor island and under the bridge I saw a huge sea turtle come out of the water and swim right by my board.
Favorite SUP nutrition? (During races/ during a long haul)
In my camelback I like to put powerade, for some reason I can't drink Gatorade while I'm on a long paddle. I haven't really found energy chews that I like yet, but I'll eat power bars, such as cliff bars or luna bars.
Goals for 2014
Paddle harder and just train for more races.
Favorite post-paddle nosh (snack/beer/recovery drink)
I love smoothies and also love me some acai bowls.
Your favorite non-paddle thing to do.
Swimming, jumping on the trampoline, going to the gym, and skateboarding.
Where you were born and where you live now?
Born and still being raised in Wilmington, NC. Haha 🙂
What is your occupation?
I'm in school, but my mom and dad both work hard for our family, and I'm very thankful for that.
Who do you SUP with most often?
Definitely Dad! He's the reason I've improved over this last year because he pushes me to be a better paddler.
What piece of SUP gear do you wish someone would invent?
Super warm (but thin) gloves with good grip.
What's your biggest challenge with SUP?
Money to travel to big races.
What is your proudest moment in a SUP race or event?
The 2013 Carolina Cup this past year, receiving "The Most Inspirational Local Paddler" award from John Beausang, Bailey Rosen and Standup Paddle Magazine. This made me feel like my hard work payed off and that I need to keep working hard.
Tell us about the best friend(s) you made through SUP.
EVERYONE!! All the people I see at races are all so loving to me!
What's your best SUP travel tip?
Use a Board Bag
