How to prepare for a race start with Candice Appleby

I had the pleasure of talking with Candice right before the start of the first leg of the double-down elite downwind race at the Gorge Paddle Challenge in Hood River Gorge. She looked calm and happy and I asked her what’s going through her mind, what she does as a gear check and what she likes to use when she’s on the water. It was super interesting because she pointed out that you have to focus on your own performance. You can’t go into a race focused on your competitors. If you do the best you can do, the rest will fall into place.
