The more we get together,
Together, together,
The more we get together,
The happier we’ll be.
-Raffi
On Sunday, I found myself paddling along and humming this tune by the famous Raffi.
Of all the songs to get stuck in my head, this Pre-school chart topper was pretty random because my kids are older and Raffi is no longer on repeat. However, as I paddled with BillHeather, Julie, Sloan, Miriam, and Vaal, I couldn’t stop the smile on my face and the refrain from flowing through my head. And even though the weather was lousy with a steady rain falling and a slight chill in the air, I was happy. The group was happy. And we were together.

This is the same group that paddled from O2B (Oriental to Beaufort), and this trip was the P2P, Pollocksville to Persimmons (I know we’ve got an alphabet issue).

The route started in Pollocksville on the Trent River and about 17 miles later ended at Persimmons Restaurant on the Neuse River in Downtown New Bern. The Trent River is sparsely populated for about 80% of the route and much to Heather’s delight, we paddled past Nicholas Sparks’ MTV-worthy crib. The Neuse scenery is more urban and paddling under massive concrete bridges with traffic screaming overhead was slightly exhilarating. Bill saw five or six wild turkeys along the way and afterwards confided to his wife that it was the prettiest river he’s ever paddled.

At the end of our journey, we refueled at Persimmons, reviewed the best parts of the trip (the pit stop at the Country Club was nice), and planned our next mission involving letters of the alphabet and a lot of miles in between. We’re not out to set records, or be the fastest. We like routes that involve logistics, maps, scenery, and a destination with food and frosty beverages.

We are inspired by the incredible long distance paddles by a certain group of Tennessee Mullets. With this second adventure, I realized we are forging bonds in the paddlehood and generating energy that radiates throughout the stand up community.
So, let’s get together. Mobilize your fellow sweepers and crawlers, and whether you paddle across the pond or 1000 miles down the Yukon, the happier you will be.
