Bald Head Island (BHI) is an island two miles off the coast of southeastern North Carolina. Bordered by marshlands and the Cape Fear River on one side and the Atlantic Ocean on the other side, the island’s 12,000 acres are filled with beaches, dunes, and maritime forests. The nearest off-island town, reachable by pedestrian ferry is Southport, NC. There are no cars allowed on the island—only golf carts and bicycles—which creates a peaceful atmosphere of relaxation and recreation for visitors. “Old Baldy,” the state’s oldest standing lighthouse, stands in the center of the island.

There are year-round residents, but BHI is primarily a summer resort community. As such, the Rental Operations Manager and Paddleboard Specialists will work as part of the Coastal Urge team to deliver red carpet service to visitors and residents of the island. Owner Jeoffrey Nathan says “We strive to provide the kind of experience that I’d want my family to have if we were on vacation—the best equipment, friendliest and most knowledgeable instructors, and prompt service.”

Screen Shot 2015-03-12 at 1.11.35 PMThe Coastal Urge rental fleet includes top-name brands in paddleboards and beach cruisers, including electric bicycles. The staff deliver the items daily in custom-built golf carts, providing door-to-door service. Upon delivery, they also provide a quick tutorial about how to safely use the equipment and have fun while out and about on and around the island.

Summer staff can easily find rooms for rent in Southport, and bicycle to the ferry. (Daily ferry fare is provided for off-island staff.)

All staff, including Rental Fleet Manager and Paddleboard Specialists will pitch in and help in the retail location—on the floor and assisting with rental bookings—when not scheduled to be out on tours. Staff will also deliver and maintain equipment and should be able to lift equipment in and out of the water and on and off delivery vehicles. Bald Head Island is an “all hands on deck” experience, and the shoulder seasons can be slower for rentals and tours, leading to more floor time in retail. Because they work in close quarters, the staff develops quite a camaraderie, among themselves, and among the other staff and visitors working and staying on the island.

2014-05-17 18.52.36Dale Slear, one of the earliest staff members on the island when Coastal Urge opened their retail location in 2010, remembers his time on the island fondly. “It’s such a cool little spot. I love going out there and spending a weekend. Living out there was awesome. Not having to leave the island was such a treat. The sunrise and sunset are amazing shows every day and every night. It’s nice being in town.”

He is clear about the expectations for staff living and working on the island.

“The thing you need to know about working with Coastal Urge is that everyone in the company strives for perfection in everything they do. When you walk into the stores, the first thing you notice is that they are kept very clean and well-stocked. But everyone has a great time. When you’re living on the island, though you’re always on call. You represent the brand everywhere you go. One day you might be filling in for a paddleboard instructor, or might need to drop off rentals, or work the retail floor. Every day is a different experience.”

Those with experience working in a resort area, such as a ski resort or big resort town like Key West, know that you have to be on your toes in this type of environment. “Weather can cause you to have to cancel a tour, but you need to re-book it for the guests at a time that is convenient for them, but also works with the tidal conditions in the marshes. Someone can fall off, be injured, and you have to be able to help them. Quick thinking and problem solving skills are essential,” says Slear.

“It’s important that the paddle staff understand weather, ocean currents, tidal flows, and the natural environment. Part of giving tours is teaching the guests about the wildlife and ecology of Bald Head Island. We actually have books they can read to study up,” says Nathan.

There are set rental operations and protocols, but Nathan is open to additional programming. “We’ve had summers where we offered surf camps or kid’s camps. I’m open to new ideas and would love to have someone who is self-motivated to start new programming.” Slear concurs, “As fast as you can run, Jeoffrey will run alongside you.”

Both were quick to mention that there isn’t a lot of downtime, but when there is, you have access to all of the best equipment for outdoor recreation.

It sounds like a dream summer for the right person.
