The 2015 Round the Rock is a non-profit event and all net proceeds go to Athletes for Cancer. This terrific organization offers adventure-based experiences such as surfing, outrigger canoeing, standup paddling, skiing and snowboarding, to young cancer survivors as channels of healing, achievement and life-renewal that treat the mind, body, and soul.
Paddle boarders can create a personal fundraising page and raise money for the cause. When you fundraise, it also goes toward your registration. Not only can you hit one of the nation’s best distance courses—a 13-mile, half-marathon on the water—but Athletes 4 Cancer gets much needed funding to fulfill their mission at Camp Koru.
This is one of the few proven methods to really make an impact with fundraising through your event. The SEA NYC Paddle has been using this method to successfully raise nearly $200,000 this year and $9 Million over the past 9 years for environmental and autism charities. While they haven’t bundled the registration into the fundraising, it’s still part of a great method, a method pioneered in the running world by Team in Training, the largest fundraising program of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS). Since TNT’s founding in 1988, participants have helped us raise over $1.4 billion for blood cancer research.
Running a race is expensive. To give a portion of the proceeds is wonderful, but has proven to be an inefficient method. The race directors barely cover costs and when it’s all over, many lose money. This method allows for the race to cover costs and exponentially extends their fundraising potential. It involves the paddlers in a great charity. People feel invested and like they are truly giving back while they are having fun. I love that they’re doing this and the Round the Rock is a bucket list race for me.
