The World Paddle Association, in cooperation with the 2015 Battle of the Bay, announces the 2015 WPA Championships. This year’s event will be officially named “The Battle of the Bay WPA Championship” to be held on October 17 & 18, 2015, at Crissy Field, located within Presidio National Park in San Francisco, CA.
The Battle of the Bay WPA Championships will serve as the WPA season finale, offering $15,000 in prize money and the final race of the Salt Life Cup WPA National race series. The top Male and Female point earners in the Elite division will compete for the $8,500 Salt Life Cup total bonus money. Competitors who have competed in a minimum of three Salt Life Cup WPA National events in 2015 will qualify for the bonus money and 2015 Salt Life Cup Champion.
“The WPA is extremely excited to conduct the WPA Championships and Salt Life Cup season ending event with the Battle of the Bay,” says Byron Kurt, President of the WPA. “Given the race location near the Golden Gate Bridge and the great job that the event director Stephen Pugh has done with the Battle of the Bay in past years, this should be an exciting and fun paddle board event for all competitors.”
“It’s going to be an insane paddle board race around Alcatraz with some super technical conditions. I’m stoked to visit SAN Francisco, see the sights, and paddle near the golden gate bridge – definitely a destination race!! I’ll be there!”
This will be the fifth year running of the Battle of the Bay, which has continued to be a WPA-sanctioned event and grows in attendance every year.
“The Battle of the Bay is an amazing event in an amazing location. There are not too many SUP races in the world where you can paddle around two iconic landmarks in the same race. Paddling around Alcatraz Island and the Golden Gate Bridge are sure to be memories that you will never forget. Definitely put this race on your SUP bucket list!”
Race Director Stephen Pugh adds, “We’re thrilled this year’s fifth-annual Battle of the Bay will be joining forces with the WPA and Salt Life Championships. San Francisco Bay is an amazing venue—where else can you experience racing paddle boards around the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz?”
