2015 Chucktown Showdown Recap, Photos and Results

It was another spectacular event this year. The weather cooperated, sort of, in that it was super sunny and not as hot as previous years, but the North wind at 15+ wreaked havoc on the conditions in the distance course. It was choppy and sloppy and the downwind section we all hoped for turned into about 200 yards of fun. It was a grind with a great view. And while we didn’t have the rainbows from last year, we definitely had a good incoming tide to help us through the finish.

This is always a great race and Charleston never disappoints. The pre-race happy hour and post race pub crawl kept everyone happy to paddle. Really well organized and a fun time. The food trucks rocked.

The event benefits the Special Olympics of South Carolina. This is one of the more active paddle board Special Olympics groups and works closely with our friends in South Florida. It’s an amazing charity and brings out the best in the sport. The race was able to make a great donation to their program and with the help of this and the Lake Murray Race, they seem like they have the equipment and the means to start growing. The Mullet LOVES special olympics athletes and coaches.

The race: Hobie and Carolina Paddle Company Team Rider April Zilg crushed the 9-mile course finishing first overall in the women and would have placed 4th in the mens 12’6″ division (but would have still been edged out by Cory-they can fight that out at home). April’s looking really strong heading into the end of this season. The top 5 women were April Zilg, Isabelle Picard, Mary Ann Boyer, Julie Richards, Jenny Alderman, and Kim Hillhouse.

In the Men’s Elite, the mad globetrotting yogi and Boga Badass team paddler, Jeramie Vaine had a successful Charleston homecoming (he lived there a lifetime and a wakeboard ago). He won the mens elite in impressive fashion, pushing the field fast and hard from the start, and breaking people along the way. He eventually took advantage of a Jack Sauve slip and fall to create some distance and came in just under a minute ahead for the win. Brian Meyer, Kevin Rhodes and Bill Kraft rounded out the top 5. The competition was really impressive this year.
