Where do you SUP the most?
There are a few lakes in my area; my favorite is the county water authority reservoir. It’s huge and no motor boats allowed so it’s really serene. Also, the Chattahoochee River.
What board do you ride?
What paddle do you use?
Aztek Paddle with an 80 race blade.
Have you changed boards/paddles since you started? If so, why?
Yes, I learned a lot along the way. I started with a pintail Lahui Kai and I loved it bit didn’t realize that I could get more stability with a square tail so I bought the Hobie and I love it. I had a Quick Blade paddle and my shoulder wasn’t happy with that and I demoed an Aztek Paddle at the Carolina Cup and it made a huge difference. Nothing can make me chafe my mind about paddle.
Where would you most like to SUP?
Oh, you know, someplace tropical with crystal clear water for days like Tahiti or Bora Bora.
Best piece of SUP advice you’ve gotten?
Race with what you know. Don’t change things at the last minute.
Weirdest thing that’s happened to you while SUPping?
I was on a private lake on a beautiful glassy day and noticed something floating in the water (one of my biggest fears has always been finding a dead body) and as I got closer that’s exactly what it looked like. It was about the size of a torso with flesh and bones. It was like a horror movie that you can’t look away from. I got about 10 feet away and saw that it was a big blob and had a type of flat nose or bill thingy. Of course all kinds of crazy thoughts flashed through my mind in about three seconds flat and my hear rate went sky high. I was sure my legs were going to give out and I would fall right on top of it and have a heart attack and drown. I paddled over to a dock where I had seen a man and woman and hyperventilated trying to tell them about it. The woman was concerned and the man just looked and me and said, “Sounds like a lake carp. A boat must have hit it.”
Favorite SUP nutrition? (During races/ during a long haul)
Goals for 2015 and did you accomplish them?
- Paddle 1,000 miles. I’m currently at 783 so I still have time and
- Race in Chattajack and not died. Check!
Favorite post-paddle nosh (snack/beer/recovery drink)
This is the hardest question to answer. Probably because I am not a big foodie. I try to always have ice water in my car. Ha. Lame. I know.
Your favorite non-paddle thing to do
Wait, there’s life outside of paddling? Spend time with my daughters and anything outdoors.
Where you were born and where you live now?
I was born in Utah, moved to Hawaii when I was 18, California when I was 28 and Georgia when I was 35 and that’s where I am now.
What is your occupation?
Photographer, mainly weddings but anything regarding people. (Note from the Mullet: Check out Shawna’s site here, she’s an AMAZING PHOTOGRAPHER)
Who do you SUP with most often?
I’m alone most of the time but when schedules line up I get together with number of friends.
What piece of SUP gear do you wish someone would invent?
Oh, gosh, it doesn’t take a lot for me to be content and there’s already everything I can think of. Maybe something that massages my feet while I paddle. Ha ha!
What’s your biggest challenge with SUP?
Managing my Type 1 Diabetes for sure. Being on an insulin pump and regulating blood sugar and bonks can be frustrating. It’s making me have tighter control though, so that’s good.
What is your proudest moment in a SUP race or event?
Finishing Chattajack in 6 hours and 44 minutes. My goal was less that 7:30.
Tell us about the best friend(s) you made through SUP
That’s been the best part for sure. The 100/100 Paddle Challenge group has provided motivation, encouragement, friendly competition, information, like minded people and all that has led to some really incredible friendships that I wouldn’t have found on my own. Great relationships have to have a common bond and being on the water with someone who loves it as much as I do is awesome.
What’s your best SUP travel tip?
Make a checklist and triple check it before leaving.
Ask a question that you want Mullet Nation to answer
I have two lab mix dogs. One is a little neurotic and won’t go on the board and the others a lab/pit mix and chase anything. Should I work on training one of them to ride with me or just get another dog? Ha ha. Like an adorable French bulldog?
