Jane Paddler: Sarah Westbrook from Greenville, NC

Where do I paddle the most?

Mostly paddle in the Tar River (near Greenville, NC), but I do spend a fair amount of time paddling around New Bern, NC.

Current board?

I paddle a SWEET SIC 12’6″ Pro.  She’s a beauty!!

What kind of paddle do you use?

Quickblade Kanaha-90

What was your first board?

My first board was) the 10’6″ Surftech Universal, also known as “the Scout.”

Where would you most like to SUP?

I’m part of a cardiac surgery group that goes to Nicaragua yearly to provide heart valve replacements for the indigent.  Every year on the last day, we go to the beach.  It’s so incredibly beautiful.  I’d love to paddle there!!

Best piece of SUP advice you’ve gotten?

Best advice ever-MUSTARD! (for cramping) Hahaha!  Thanks again, Tim & Annette!

Weirdest thing that’s happened to you while SUPping?

Probably hauling that dang dorm fridge out of the Tar River…I really thought it was just a cooler.Sarah

Favorite SUP nutrition? (During races/ during a long haul)

Found a fantastic recipe for almond butter, oats, coconut, honey & chia balls covered in dark chocolate.  Those little babies powered me thru the Chattajack.  AND Tailwind. Holy moly, that stuff is incredible!!

Goals for 2015 – and did you accomplish them?

The first was to complete the Carolina Cup (Short course, on the Scout) in under an hour!  Did it in 55!!!  And to complete the Chattajack on my new race board in under 8 hours!!  Did it in 6:22!

Favorite post-paddle nosh (snack/beer/recovery drink)?

Chipotle.  Duh.  And Stella.

Your favorite non-paddling thing to do?

I own a beautiful Triumph Bonneville.  I love to ride.

Jane Paddler: Sarah Westbrook

Where you were born and where you live now?

Born in Vermont.  Grew up in Kansas & Colorado.  Lives in Greenville, NC.

What is your occupation?

I’m a Cardiac Surgical Technologist…do you ever watch a medical drama and they are in surgery…and the doctor say “scalpel” and the mystery hand shoots out and hands the surgeon instruments???  I’m the mystery hand.

Who do you paddle with the most?

Cooper the amazing SUP dog, my sweet hubby/Sherpa/cheerleader Jeffro, and of course, the one and only Kate Lewis.  I’ve chased that woman up and down Lawson’s Creek countless times doing intervals.  I hate to love intervals…but damn, it sure did pay off at Chattajack!!

Jane Paddler: Sarah Westbrook

What is your biggest challenge with SUP?

Time.  I work two jobs, so I’ve really learned how to prioritize my time.  Laundry can wait….

What is your proudest moment in a SUP race or event?

Doing Chattajack in 6 hours and 22 minutes.  It was the most difficult/ most amazing thing I’ve ever done.

Jane Paddler: Sarah Westbrook

Tell us about the best friend(s) you made through SUP

So many!  I’m so blessed to be part of the 100/100 Paddle Challenge family!  It’s such an awesome group.  So supportive & fun!  I was also able to work with Kate & Charley Lewis from Stand Up Outfitters in New Bern & set up some “ladies day” paddles!! It was so RAD to get my girlfriends on the water and spread the paddle love. We laughed, we paddled, we laughed some more.

What is your best SUP travel tip?

Let someone else drive so you can look at the pretty leaves on I-40 on the way to Chattajack…it’s stunning!  (And don’t tie a 14′ board down too tight while its in a sup taxi.)
