WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGE AS A RETAILER?
The biggest challenge for us was seeding a SUP community in New Bern. When we first opened in 2011, there were a half dozen paddle boards in town, and we had two of them. At first, convincing people they could SUP the waterways of Eastern North Carolina, 12 months of the year was a challenge. Today, we have a thriving SUP community and are grateful for the opportunity to be part of it.
HOW HEALTHY IS THE SPORT – on a scale of 1-10, 10 being extremely healthy?
HOW LIKELY WILL THE SPORT CONTINUE TO GROW IN THIS NEXT YEAR – on a scale of 1-10?
WHERE WILL WE SEE THE GROWTH IF ANY?
Growth of enthusiast level paddlers – people who are committed to the sport and become regular purchasers of equipment.
DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR MANUFACTURERS?
Be cautiously optimistic about demand for boards.
WHAT KIND OF PADDLING SETTINGS AND CONDITIONS ARE NEAR YOUR SHOP?
You name it. We have flatwater, downwinding and surfing, on small rivers, big rivers, backwaters, sounds, fishing grounds, beaches, and islands. All within an hour, 12 months a year.
WHAT IS IT ABOUT PADDLING THAT GETS YOU UP IN THE MORNING? THAT GETS YOU EXCITED?
It’s special. It’s like a club you belong to, where you get to experience things in nature and develop relationships with people that are unique to the sport and lifestyle.
DESCRIBE YOUR LOCAL PADDLE COMMUNITY. WHEN DO YOU GET TOGETHER AND WHAT ARE THEY LIKE?
The local paddle community is a diverse group of racers, explorers, surfers, fitness freaks, and paddling families. We get together at big events like our race and other races in the area (we’re talking about you, Carolina Cup) and small events, like cookouts at our waterfront hangout.
What local events do you have and what are their dates and locations?
May 2016 – Soulfest at The Landing (our waterfront location). A SUP/Yoga/SUPYoga collaboration with 2 Rivers Yoga.
A quarterly workshop series dedicated to the wellness of your soul through the moving meditations of paddling and yoga.
August 13, 2016 – The 5th Annual Colonial Race on the Neuse River in New Bern. Open water racing at an exciting spectator-friendly venue. Rec and Elite races and a NEW downwind course this year.
BEST PIECE OF SUP ADVICE YOU GIVE TO PADDLERS?
Always be prepared for the conditions. Know what you’re getting into and be outfitted with the right gear for the elements. And keep the waterways clean.
WHAT ARE YOUR MUST-HAVE ACCESSORIES FOR EVERY PADDLER?
Paddler safety is a hot topic, so anything that is for “safe” and “legal” paddling is a must-have. However, every paddler needs to know when and how to use to the appropriate safety gear for their environment.
