DOES YOUR EVENT BENEFIT A CHARITY AND IF SO, CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THEM?
Our main charity is the James Greer Foundation. The James Greer Foundation (non-profit) was formed to give back to local communities in the form of student scholarships. Graduating high school student athletes can be eligible for these scholarships, if they compete in the Texas Gulf Surfing Association (TGSA). Thanks to James, we all know how important it is to follow our goals and The James Greer Foundation is set up to help kids in our community do just that. Donations: Cinco de Mayo Race registration page (paddle guru) and on Facebook
What makes your event great? What will paddlers love about coming to your event?
We have, to our knowledge, the only SUP Sprint Races under the lights at night (Friday Night Lights SUP Races.) We also have the only SUP Wave-Riding Contest in the Lone Star State. The Cinco SUP 5K Race is unique because of the flat water run into a short, challenging Gulf of Mexico run at the end then onto the beach. Let’s not forget the great BBQ we feed for free to all the competitors for two days plus live bands for three days during the four -day-long event.
Can you describe the different races and courses?
“Friday Night Lights” (under the lights) SUP Sprint Races
Cinco SUP 5K Race
Cinco SUP Wave-Riding Contest
WHAT KIND OF PADDLING SETTINGS AND CONDITIONS WILL RACERS FACE?
Cinco Sprint Races under the lights: Flat-water calm conditions.
Cinco SUP 5K Race: mostly flat water with as short run into the Gulf of Mexico and running finish on the beach.
SUP Wave-Riding Contest will be held at Packery Channel; Jetty swell size TBD.
Will there be any clinics and what are the details?
One of our favorite clinics for the third year now is the South Texas Lighthouse for the Blind surf clinic. Surf Expo will follow at the canals at the Boathouse with SUP lessons for beginners.
Where can people get paddle gear like PFDs and Hydration packs?
Some gear may be available on location, but best to come prepared.
Are there paddleboard rentals available and if yes, where? Contact info?
Paddleboard Rental & Lessons will be available at SUP Expo for no cost to riders.
Where can people buy groceries?
Best best here would be H.E.B in Flour Bluff before you get to the Island. Otherwise the only options will be convenience stores. There are plenty of other food options with numerous restaurants & bars.
Where can people stay? Do you have a hotel you can recommend and contact info?
Cinco de Mayo Pro official hotel is the Holiday Inn Beach hotel on North Padre Island. We offer lower rates to all athletes participating in the Cinco 2016. Please contact us and we will get you the hotel code.
What great local restaurants can you recommend?
Where is the best coffee in town?
