Bone Island 6-Mile Paddle Race, Lazy Dog Key West This weekend!

I'm not sure if you're as cold as I am, but the thought of Key West sounds amazing to me right now—especially when facing down the 12+ feet of snow or freezing cold rain we've had in the past few weeks....

WHERE WERE YOU WERE BORN AND WHERE YOU LIVE NOW?

Born in the Bluegrass State – Louisville KY – I now live in West Creek, NJ – the Garden State.

WHAT IS YOUR OCCUPATION?

I have had many occupations over the years: my favorites though are mother, park ranger and outdoor leader! Presently I grow trees and nursery stock with my husband and work part time at L.L.Bean. I have found a great niche teaching SUP at the Outdoor Discovery School.

WHERE DO YOU SUP THE MOST?

Lake Stockwell – Medford Lakes, NJ

DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE LOCAL PADDLE SHOP?

South End Surf ‘N Paddle and Island Surf and Sail on LBI are great shops. They both sponsor races & clinics throughout the summer months.

WHAT PADDLEBOARD, SURFSKI OR OC DO YOU RIDE MOST?

I love my new 12’6 404 that I purchased slightly used the end of last summer.

DO YOU OWN ANY OTHER PADDLEBOARDS, SURFSKIS OR OCS AND WHAT KIND?

I also own a BIC 11′ Wing which I paddle frequently at the farm.

WHAT PADDLE DO YOU USE?

I use an adjustable Werner Nitro paddle

HAVE YOU CHANGED BOARDS/PADDLES SINCE YOU STARTED? IF SO, WHY?

Working at L.L. Bean has allowed me the opportunity to try and buy numerous boards over the last few years. My first board was a BIC – actually I have had three BIC boards. They are durable and stable and great boards for instruction and recreational paddlers. I changed boards as they became lighter and eventually purchased my 404. It’s important to me to have a board that I can easily load and unload – one that is stable and not too pretty so I don’t have to worry about an occasional scratch from handling. I want to not be worried or stressed about equipment….. just keep it light, simple and fun.

WHERE WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO SUP?

I would like to paddle in my own backyard……perhaps some of the National Parks in Utah and Montana……there is much beauty close to home – I love turquoise warm water so perhaps a trip to close by islands would keep me paddling with a smile.

BEST PIECE OF SUP ADVICE YOU’VE GOTTEN?

Wear your leash! And I do!!!

WHAT ARE YOUR PADDLE GOALS FOR THIS YEAR?

My personal goals for this year are to increase my fitness and my mileage and thanks to the 100/100 Challenge I am highly motivated! I also want to learn to paddle surf – so I hope to have time to take some lessons down at South End Paddle’N Surf.

WEIRDEST THING THAT’S HAPPENED TO YOU WHILE SUPPING?

I can’t think of anything weird that has happened when I’ve paddled but I have seen some beautiful birds and turtles and once two beavers at sunset!

FAVORITE SUP NUTRITION?

I’m a recreational racer so I haven’t ventured further than five miles – so water is all I’ve carried!

FAVORITE POST-PADDLE NOSH (SNACK/BEER/RECOVERY DRINK)

My favorite post-paddle snack is a few tangerine cuties or a Blue Moon.

YOUR FAVORITE NON-PADDLE THING TO DO?

My favorite non-paddle thing to do is to “just BE” on the beach with my best friend Bro (husband)

WHAT’S YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGE WITH SUP?

My biggest challenge is balancing TIME

WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST MOMENT IN A SUP RACE OR EVENT?

I am proud to participate in races, events, clinics and certifications. I took the ACA SUP 1 and 2 last winter and after months of practice and videos sent for review I finally passed in August…….This past year I had several opportunities for clinics – this old dog can learn new tricks!

TELL US ABOUT THE BEST FRIEND(S) YOU MADE THROUGH SUP.

SUP is about community! I believe Brody Welt said that a few weeks ago….. The SUP community is friendly and motivating and there’s a lot of love in a lot of hearts…..sometimes it makes me feel like it’s the 1970s where folks truly care about their neighbor! I am grateful for all the fine folks I have met through Paddle Fit, ACA and various clinics and races.

Jane Paddler Marsha Worthington

WHAT’S YOUR BEST SUP TRAVEL TIP?

Travel light – Plan ahead and rent or borrow paddle equipment….. Have fun and stress less ….. keep your mind and your heart open and your smile on! March2015_023.JPG

WHAT PIECE OF SUP GEAR DO YOU WISH SOMEONE WOULD INVENT?

A comfortable PFD / hydration vest.
