I run two brands – Girls at Play and Mind Body Paddle, am an Instructor Trainer for the American Canoe Association for both SUP and WW Kayak, a 500 hr certified yoga teacher and professional paddler/instructor. WHERE DO YOU SUP THE MOST?
DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE LOCAL PADDLE SHOP?
WHAT PADDLEBOARD, SURFSKI OR OC DO YOU RIDE MOST?
Locally I would say the BIC 10′ Cross because I love paddling upstream for a workout on the French Broad and then practicing yoga as I float back down.
DO YOU OWN ANY OTHER PADDLEBOARDS, SURFSKIS OR OCS AND WHAT KIND?
BIC 11′ Wing, BIC 9’2 River Inflatable, BIC ACE-TEC 9’2 Performer
WHAT PADDLE DO YOU USE?
Werner Trance 95
HAVE YOU CHANGED BOARDS/PADDLES SINCE YOU STARTED? IF SO, WHY?
I’ve always paddled BIC boards because I like the variety of boards that they make. I enjoy SUP yoga, paddling flatwater, paddling whitewater and surfing and BIC SUP makes awesome designs for all disciplines – especially now in their 2016 line-up! I have switched paddles to using Werner paddles because I love the product and I love the team behind the product.
WHERE WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO SUP?
I’ve already paddled in over 12 countries around the world, but I have yet to paddle in Indonesia. A surf trip is actually already in the works!
BEST PIECE OF SUP ADVICE YOU’VE GOTTEN?
Try it! Coming from a whitewater kayak background I was very skeptical about SUP. People kept encouraging me to try it and I’m glad I did.
WHAT ARE YOUR PADDLE GOALS FOR THIS YEAR?
Paddle surf more!
WEIRDEST THING THAT’S HAPPENED TO YOU WHILE SUPPING?
It’s not really weird, but the first time my bathing suit got slashed by a fin while surfing was eye opening. I thought whitewater kayaking gave you cuts and bruises….
FAVORITE SUP NUTRITION?
I’m currently studying to be an Ayurveda Wellness Counselor and base my diet and lifestyle on the Ayurvedic principles of body constitution and seasonal routines. Nature’s natural intelligence combined with our body’s natural intelligence will keep us healthy and balanced if we know how to listen. There is no ‘one size fits all’ when it comes to diet and lifestyle.
FAVORITE POST-PADDLE NOSH (SNACK/BEER/RECOVERY DRINK)
Plain ol’ water.
YOUR FAVORITE NON-PADDLE THING TO DO?
WHAT’S YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGE WITH SUP?
Balancing my time between whitewater kayaking and SUP. They’re both so fun!
TELL US ABOUT THE BEST FRIEND(S) YOU MADE THROUGH SUP.
My fellow ambassadors at BIC SUP are amazing and I’m so grateful that I get to be part of such an amazing group. Everyone is so supportive of each other and has the best time on the water together. I’m especially grateful for Justin Schaay who has helped me out a lot with paddle surfing skills and Casi Ryncowski who is my partner in empowering women on the water.
WHAT PIECE OF SUP GEAR DO YOU WISH SOMEONE WOULD INVENT?
So far I have everything that I need…
