So far, it looks like a rainy weekend. It’s not a big deal because we’ll be in the water, but will mean a few extra layers for warmth. Remember, this is a glorified meetup, so it’s entirely up to you if you want to do part of the challenge or none at all. You can do it as a relay. You can paddle harbor island. You can do a downwinder instead. Whatever floats your boat. No shirts. No entry fee. Self supported. Meetup.

It looks like light rain and cloudy for the paddle. Not bad from a rain POV. The wind is gusting NE to 20, which is an amazing downwinder. Distressed Mullet Wrightsville Beach Forecasting Page: https://distressedmullet.com/wrightsville-beach-nc/

Rain in the morning during the half marathon. It will start to clear up, but the wind is going nuclear. Gusting NE to 40, which is an even MORE amazing downwinder. Distressed Mullet Wrightsville Beach Forecasting Page: https://distressedmullet.com/wrightsville-beach-nc/

Showers in the morning, then partly cloudy in the afternoon. High near 60F. Winds NNW at 15 to 25 mph. Chance of rain 40%. Winds could occasionally gust over 40 mph.

High:06:10 AM
Low:12:31 PM
High:06:31 PM

Swell:

Minimal (ankle high or less) surf. (This is official, but can’t be right.)

Summary for both days:

I don’t see how it can blow NE so hard and have ankle-high swell. It’s going to be bigger. BUT, it won’t be 4-6 feet which is what we usually see with this kind of NE wind. It’ll be a great downwinder situation, but not so good hauling it up the ICWW if we go with the wind on the ocean side and against it on the ICWW side. If it’s blowing over 20, it doesn’t make sense to do the course. It makes more sense to do a long downwinder to Carolina Beach. Lightning and thunderstorms are a deal breaker for both days. No one goes out.

We will find a way to paddle, eat, run, and paddle in a way that will be fun for everyone. One thing we can easily do is leave from the Blockade Runner and go to the Carolina Beach boat Basin. Those who want to go out through the surf and be in the ocean can go from the ocean side. Those who want to go on the sound side, can go on the ICWW. We all end up at the CB boat basin and have a great time. We can be creative. We can make it fun. And we can keep it challenging.
