CAN YOU DESCRIBE THE DIFFERENT RACES AND COURSES?

Elite 8.4 Mile Bay Crossing: The 8.4 mile race is for elite paddlers with the skill and fitness to complete this endurance challenge; racers will launch from Sandy Point State Park and enter the span between the East bound and West bound bridges and paddle from the West to the Eastern shore, round a marker and return across the bay (from East to West) to finish back at Sandy Point State Park. Paddlers can expect to see varying wave, tide and wind conditions which may increase as they proceed further from shore and cross the center of the bay. In the event of excessively high winds or currents that result in unfit conditions for a bay crossing, the course will be modified to keep the racers on the Western shore near Sandy Point State Park; racers will complete an upwind / downwind paddling course that will prove challenging but does not take them into the deeper waters of the Bay.

5K Paddle: The 5K course is for intermediate to advanced paddlers that want to challenge themselves in bay conditions. Racers will launch from Sandy Point State Park and complete a course off the Western shore of the beach, rounding various landmarks and markers in the bay, then finishing back at the beach area. Paddlers can expect to see varying wave, tide and wind conditions. The course layout may be modified depending on the weather conditions the day of the race.

1.5K Paddle: For less experienced paddlers or those that want a more casual experience, the 1.5K course is a great way to experience the race atmosphere without the pressure of a longer, more challenging course. Racers will launch from Sandy Point State Park and complete a course off the Western shore of the beach, rounding various markers, then finishing back in the beach area. Depending on weather conditions, this course may be relocated to more protected waters on of Mezick Ponds in the protected inlet at Sandy Point State Park.

WHAT KIND OF PADDLING SETTINGS AND CONDITIONS WILL RACERS FACE?

Paddlers can expect to see varying wave, tide and wind conditions which may increase as they proceed further from shore and cross the center of the bay.

Will there be any clinics?

There will be an Introductory Clinic (for new to intermediate paddlers) offered from 4pm – 6pm, led by Dawn Ehman Marohl, Kate and Shendan Grove. This clinic will provide the fundamentals of Chesapeake Bay paddling and useful tips and techniques for the race, including a preview of the race course and conditions at Sandy Point State Park. There will be an Intermediate Clinic from 5pm – 7pm, led by Jeramie Vaine; this clinic will focus on increasing your paddling efficiency and focus on paddle technique drills and the anatomy of paddling. Sign-up is available on PaddleGuru: Bay Bridge Paddle

What makes your event great? What will paddlers love about coming to your event?

The Bay Bridge paddle will launch from Sandy Point Park on the Chesapeake Bay outside Annapolis, MD. With a beautiful sandy beach and expansive views overlooking the bay, paddlers will get to launch from one of the iconic paddling destinations in Maryland. The Elite 8.4 mile race will provide paddlers the chance to cross the Chesapeake Bay and back, a bucket list item for many experienced paddlers, while the 5K and 1.5K racers will paddle in the shadow of the twin spans of the Bay Bridge.
