Three times is a charm. For the third year in a row, the Facebook group “100/100 Paddle Challenge” is taking up the gauntlet where each member will strive to achieve 100 HOURS in 100 DAYS. Why? Because we can and because it’s free and it’s fun and it’s a shared endeavor. We achieve our individual 100 hour goal while everyone in the group encourages us and we, in turn, do the same. We share photos, gps art and heart rate zones if you please. We just did 100 miles in 100 days and this flips the advantage to those who just like to paddle, for hours and hours and hours, with a training goal or not.
This challenge takes perseverance. This challenge takes commitment. This challenge starts April 10, 2016 and ends exactly 100 days later on July 18, 2016. 100 Hours in 100 Days. Standup, Prone, OC, Surf ski, Dragon Boat or Kayak if you choose. A Paddle must be involved. Its honor system rules, you track your hours, you tell us what you did and we believe you. The days are longer, the sun is warmer and it’s all about getting out on the water. Some of us will achieve the goal, some will not. It’s all good. This is free, this is fun, and this is voluntary. You must send a request to join the group on facebook.
What we are is a peer-to-peer connection all working on a common goal anyway we can. And as our reward, we make new friends, hear about new gear, expand our bucket list of paddling dreams, and EARN A STICKER. Yes, you get a free reward for your endeavors. You only get one a year, but it’s pretty cool. You have to earn your annual sticker by completing at least one of our 100 day paddle challenges. It’s not something you can buy or get on Amazon, it has to be earned. And it is cool. It goes on paddles and boards and cars oh my! It identifies you as one of us. And being one of us….you will have personal pride, but you will also start making “signage” at events, play with your food, and gravitate to those that “get” your paddle addiction. Social paddles, races, clinics….we gravitate towards each other like bait balls and schools of fish.
The Facts, Just the Facts
The 100/100 Paddle Challenge facebook group is a closed group for INDIVIDUALS who are interested in actively participating in 100 day paddle challenges. It is not physician designed or endorsed, it is family friendly, free, has “rules of conduct” that must be abided by (ex. posts or comments must be constructive, #NOSNARKZONE) and we keep it free from advertising, marketing, political or religious views. This group is run by individuals and it is not a for-profit business. We retain complete control over content and membership; anything demeaning or insulting or that we feel is inappropriate gets KO’d and the member deleted. We stress “safety on the internet” and maintain that personal information stays offline and that the group not be used as a fundraiser, social meetup site, race calendar, or chat room. We may even have to cap membership numbers to keep it manageable. Despite all that serious talk, we strive to have a “happy place” to share our paddling adventures and goals.
We have two very special relationships with Distressed Mullet and Carolina Paddleboard Company in Wrightsville Beach. The Mullet has been our champion of stoke since the beginning, organizing social paddles with the likes of Chuck Patterson or breakfast with a pro. They are the go to resource for everything paddling; races, used or new gear, training, product reviews, how-to-videos; it’s all there. Carolina Paddleboard Company offers a 100/100 discount on most products and has supported us since this group started three years ago when it was a group of just one. They’ve got demo’s and blogposts and all sorts of boards and boats to sell. Both have been an integral part of the growth of this group and we believe in pointing all in their direction. I started the 100/100 group as a way to find standup paddleboard training partners; I’m just me, and you can be just you; but WE will be awesome together.
Without further ado, get your member request in and start thinking about where you’re going to paddle those hours. Start posting pictures and hours and mileage and the group will take it from there. We will welcome you to our 100/100 waters and say “good job” along the way.
