Joe Paddler Bob Diehl

Where you were born and where you live now?

Nuremburg, Germany,  now Louisville, Kentucky

What is your occupation?

Artisan in Wood

Where do you paddle the most?

Split between Louisville area waters and Florida waters.

Do you have a favorite local paddleboard shop?

No. Louisville, actually Kentucky as a whole, is woefully lacking in SUP support. One local shop has made an effort, but hasn’t really gotten the community excited about SUP.

What paddleboard, surfski or OC do you ride most?

I have a nice selection of boards now and use them equally depending on water conditions and whether or not I have others borrowing a board.

I have three Uli inflatables: one for touring/racing, one for whitewater and a small one for my granddaughter in a couple of years. I have a Fanatic Fly Race 14 for serious racing and for using with my Row Board unit which allows me to scull. Then I have a GUSU custom 12’6″ for that class of paddling. I have several of those also.

What paddle do you use?

My favorites are a QB all carbon Kanaha and a GUSU carbon/kevlar

Have you changed boards/paddles/equipment since you started? If so, why?

Sure. As your experience grows and you expand your paddling, one needs new equipment. that and the fact that others want to buy your used equipment keeps things fresh.

If you could travel to anywhere in the world to paddle, where would you go?

There are too many to choose. I do like clear water and flowing water, so probably where there are springs. I like class 1-2 whitewater also. I’m not fond of paddling in dark waters.

Best piece of SUP advice you’ve ever received?

I don’t believe I’ve ever received any SUP advice. I just like to stand and paddle because the view of the water is better than from a seated position. I discovered that the very first time I tried SUP. I saw a manatee which nobody else spotted.

Weirdest thing that’s happened to you while paddling?

Sometimes I “zone out” and just fall off my board for no apparent reason.

Favorite SUP nutrition? (During races/ during a long haul)

Bananas and cookies

Goals for this year?

Get more folks paddling in my local area. After seven years, it’s just now beginning to get to where Louisville folks are wanting to give it a try without whining about how hard it looks.

Favorite post-paddle nosh (snack/beer/recovery drink)

Good old water can’t be beat.

Your favorite non-paddle thing to do.

At age 67, flirt with the younger ladies. Just joking?

What piece of SUP gear do you wish someone would invent?

An on board workout screen that’s large enough to see clearly in full daylight.

What is your biggest challenge with SUP?

Finding good water consistently close to home.

What is your proudest moment in a SUP race or event?

Finishing in the middle of the pack ahead of some younger paddlers.

Tell us about the best friend(s) you made through paddling.

There are too many. Many nice folks both in Louisville and in Destin, Florida where I paddle with the Paddle Destin group. They are fantastic and put on so many neat events. I can’t say enough good things about them.

Joe Paddler Bob Diehl

What was your best SUP travel trip?

Crystal River paddling with the manatees with the Paddle Destin group. Have done it for four years now. Always fun.
