Where you were born and where you live now?
I was born in Brantford, Ontario and I am currently living in Ottawa, Ontario.
What is your occupation?
I am a Personal Trainer at Greco Lean & Fit.
Where do you SUP the most?
I SUP mostly here in Ottawa out of the Rideau River and some lakes in Quebec!
Do you have a favorite local paddleboard shop?
There is not too much here in Ottawa but my favourite shop is Carolina Paddleboard Co. in Wrightsville Beach, NC.
What paddleboard, surfski or OC do you ride most?
I am currently riding a Hobie custom 12’6 paddle board.
Do you own any other paddleboards, surfskis or OCs and what kind?
I also own a B&B surf board.
What paddle do you use?
The best paddle ever, a Quickblade Trifecta 86 blade!
Have you changed boards/paddles/equipment since you started? If so, why?
While in Wrightsville Beach racing in Surf to Sound last November, I purchased April Zilg’s custom Hobie 12’6. How could I say no, the board is a beauty? I wanted a narrower board to help improve my speed and races. I also switched over to my QB to help improve my cadence.
If you could travel to anywhere in the world to paddle, where would you go?
Do I have to pick just one?! To name a few…Hawaii (M2M), Lake Tahoe, Fiji, Tofino.
Best piece of SUP advice you’ve ever received?
Short and sweet: “Paddle, paddle, paddle!”
Weirdest thing that’s happened to you while paddling?
Having a dolphin swim up beside me while paddling in Hatteras, NC.
Favorite SUP nutrition? (During races/ during a long haul)
Lots of water pre-race is key for me. I usually throw an electrolyte pack into my Camelback pre-race as well. Before morning races, I love having sweet potato, eggs, and bacon! Then I’ll have a banana and a bar an hour or so before the race.
Goals for this year?
Accomplish the Surf to Sound open water race in November in NC, place in the Cayuga Cup in Ithaca, NY in July, and continue to excel in the Ontario SUP Series tour.
Favorite post-paddle nosh (snack/beer/recovery drink)
Purps for a recovery drink. Tacos are always good post-race!!
Your favorite non-paddle thing to do.
Travel as much and as often as I can. Hike, bike, lift weights, socialize.
What piece of SUP gear do you wish someone would invent?
Something that loads the boards onto the car for you (my least favourite part after a long paddle).
What’s your biggest challenge with SUP?
Not being able to put in the amount of training time that I would like to for races, with my work schedule.
What is your proudest moment in a SUP race or event?
Placing 5th in my category in the Money Island race in the Carolina Cup last April.
Tell us about the best friend(s) you made through paddling.
So many! We have created such a wonderful and welcoming SUP community here in Ottawa, ON. We do SUP nights every Tuesday including cold beers and a BBQ. We do Christmas and birthday parties in the winter. Countless weekend road trips for the Ontario SUP Series have given me some of the best friends anyone could ask for.
What was your best SUP travel trip?
Carolina Cup in NC last April. A group of eight or so from Ottawa made the road trip down for the race weekend and then we spent the rest of the week SUP surfing on the Outer Banks!
