What is your biggest challenge as a retailer?
Finding time to get away from work. I’m very driven and my wife calls me a workaholic.
On a scale of 1-10 how healthy is the sport?
How likely will the sport continue to grow in this next year?
Where will we see the growth if any?
I see a steady increase in sales to people who went out and bought a bargain board only to discover that you get what you pay for. Kind of like what the cycling community went through.
Do you have any advice for manufacturers?
Concentrate on supporting your retailers. They are the ones who will keep the sport alive. Undercutting them on the internet will only insure the demise of the sport. If you offer free shipping to your online customers, you should also offer it to your retailers. Also if an online shopper is buying from a site which is served by one of your dealers, steer them to the shop. This will keep the sport growing and insure that the customer at least has a little instruction in technique and safety.
What kind of paddling settings and conditions are near your shop? Remember – we need all the details!! Make us want to paddle there!
We have open water with small islands to paddle out towards. The water is shallow, clear, and full of wildlife. Typically we see nurse sharks, bonnet head sharks, tarpon, manatees, turtles, stingrays, and many other reef fish. We also have a protected creek area with a mangrove tunnel that leads back to the “secret” lagoon. This is a shaded jungle type tour which most people really enjoy.
What is it about paddling that gets you up in the morning? That gets you excited? We REALLY want to know!
I love to start my day off with a paddle down the creek to the bay. The herons and osprey are out hunting, the world is starting to stir and I usually have the place to myself.
Describe your local paddle community. When do you get together and what are they like?
We have a few dozen paddlers who like to get together every month or so for a night paddle and in the fall/winter we’ll finish up with a bonfire on the beach. Also quite a few of us travel to local races in the South Florida area.
What local events do you have and what are their dates and locations?
Mid Winters in February
Spring Fling in May
Triple Crown in September – 2 day event with 3 round point system.
Best piece of SUP advice you give to paddlers?
Safety, safety, safety!
What are your must-have accessories for every paddler?
Floating phone bag with neck leash, sunscreen, sunglasses, sun shirt, inflatable lifejacket, leash, water bottles.
