Where you were born and where do you live now?
Somewhere in the Low Country of South Carolina, near Charleston. I’m named after the Cooper River. Wound up in the shelter there then was kicked out during the floods last year. They sent me to the SPCA of Wake County in Raleigh where I found my forever home!
What is your occupation?
I’M A FIELD LAB!!!!
Where do you SUP the most?
So far at the Beaver Dam section of the Falls Lake State Recreation Area but I hope to expand my horizons soon!
Do you have a favorite local paddleboard shop?
Um…haven’t been to one yet but my human talks a lot about Carolina Paddleboard Company. There are dogs there!
What paddleboard, surfski or OC do you ride most?
Starboard Whopper ASAP. It’s nice and soft on top and my human doesn’t mind my toenails on it. And it’s nice and wide.
Do you own any other paddleboards, surfskis or OCs and what kind?
My human bought an inflatable version of the Whopper for me. So we can go more places…as soon as I learn not to bark in the car so much, and as soon as I get better at something she calls “recall.” Not sure what that is. I think I am supposed to always come back when she tells me too but I JUST GET SO EXCITED!!!! She might let me on the Naish Nalu when my nails are trimmed. I’d like to try that long thing with the log that’s attached to the left side but I’ve been told I’d have to sit very, very still AND I DON’T THINK I CAN DO THAT YET!
What paddle do you use?
I BARK AT PADDLES!!!
Have you changed boards/paddles/equipment since you started? If so, why?
No, not yet. But I might if I get better at this paddle thing. I just started about a week ago.
If you could travel to anywhere in the world to paddle, where would you go?
Anywhere at all as long as I am with my human. And as long as I can swim and chase tennis balls and frisbees when we’re finished, and maybe play with other dogs. And some place with something called Shave Ice. And Poke. And something called Spam Musubi. Oh, and Loco Moco. That all sounds so good! My human talks about it a lot. I might want to roll in it.
Best piece of SUP advice you’ve ever received?
Weirdest thing that’s happened to you while paddling?
The waves….they come after me so I have to put my toes on the nose and try to eat them, then I fall off.
Favorite SUP nutrition? (During races/ during a long haul)
Plato’s Dog Treats – duck flavor and the salmon strips. Oh, and goose poop!
Goals for this year?
Learn not to bark from excitement too much in the car on the way to the paddle place.
Favorite post-paddle nosh (snack/beer/recovery drink)
The cat’s food.
Your favorite non-paddle thing to do.
FETCH ANYTHING but especially balls and frisbees; annoy the cats. Play with my stuffed chameleon.
What piece of SUP gear do you wish someone would invent?
A ball launcher that could be mounted on the board SO I COULD FETCH!!!!
What’s your biggest challenge with SUP?
Not barking at those long things with the flat ends….the paddles. Trying not to eat the waves.
What is your proudest moment in a SUP race or event?
My first time paddling. My human was so happy when I just jumped on the board and we paddled out together!
Tell us about the best friend(s) you made through paddling.
My HUMAN! She saved me!! I LOVE HER. I’d like to meet Penny, another paddle dog. And Zipi. And I think I’d like to meet someone named Larry Cain, he has dogs too.
What was your best SUP travel trip?
EVERY TIME WE GO TO THE LAKE AND I GET TO PADDLE AND FETCH!
(Full disclosure: Cooper was rescued earlier this year by Inland Paddler and Mullet editor Lisa Schell)
