Have you changed boards/paddles/equipment since you started? If so, why?

In May when I began my SUP journey I bought an 11’6″ SUPATX touring board. I got stuck in a current on my first time trying a long paddle. I was staring at a gazebo on the shore for 20 minutes until Ifinally gave up.(It was the GPR 9-mile course) One day later I sold that board and bought my race board. Never looking back or getting stuck in that current again.

If you could travel to anywhere in the world to paddle, where would you go?

Iceland under the Northern Lights!

Best piece of SUP advice you’ve ever received?

Have Fun! If you aren’t having fun you should be doing something else. Oh and use your core!

Weirdest thing that’s happened to you while paddling?

Well, when I went back to that current that I got stuck in (mentioned above) with my new board, I attacked it hard and fast. I beat it! However when I turned back to the gazebo that I could not pass the first time to say “I own you now”, a rogue wave came out of no where and knocked me right in to the water. Was it the paddle gods? The gazebo gods? I do not know, but I learned to keep my eyes in front of me and respect the water. Pretty darn weird!

Favorite SUP nutrition? (During races/ during a long haul)

Chewy Granola bars… and Water.

Goals for this year?

In less than a week I hit my 40th birthday and my third month paddling. I am so excited to find something that I love and enjoy doing. Getting fit was the original goal. My first race (the GPR 9 mile)is in exactly one month. My goal is to complete it. For 2017 My goal will be to win it.

Favorite post-paddle nosh (snack/beer/recovery drink)

Usually I am paddling early in the morning so I really look forward to my coffee when I get off the water.

Your favorite non-paddle thing to do.

I love to sing and play my guitar.

What piece of SUP gear do you wish someone would invent?

Virtual reality SUP experience for your home with an electronic Indo board and paddle. You could train inside on a crappy day. It would be pretty cool if you could visit thousands of paddling locations around the world by changing a disk or something..

What’s your biggest challenge with SUP?

Getting my technique correct and using less arms. Engaging the core has been the hardest thing to do. Finally starting to get it! Now I am tracking all over the place lol

What is your proudest moment in a SUP race or event?

Yet to race but I feel proudest when my wife tells me how proud she is of me for doing all that I have been doing with this sport.

Tell us about the best friend(s) you made through paddling.

I started because a friend who lives down the road likes to paddle. From there I have met so many incredible people! The paddle community is awesome. People from all walks of life that have one thing in common. SUP.
