Where you were born and where you live now?

I was born in Israel and I live on Long Island NY.

What is your occupation?

Software guy.

Where do you SUP the most?

Around Long Island, Ocean, Bays, Rivers.

Meet Joe Paddler Dolio

Do you have a favorite local paddleboard shop?

Yes, South Shore Paddleboards

What paddleboard, surfski or OC do you ride most?

Starboards, they are awesome, a 14′ all star for long distance and sprinting, and Hypernut for surfing, love them.

Do you own any other paddleboards, surfskis or OCs and what kind?

Nope.

What paddle do you use?

High aspect carbon by Starboard’s for long distance, and Quickblade carbon for surfing.

Have you changed boards/paddles/equipment since you started? If so, why?

Yes, I started with a beginner’s board – heavy, whide and long, and as I improved I opted for lighter and shorter boards. I am not that sophisticated.

Meet Joe Paddler Dolio

If you could travel to anywhere in the world to paddle, where would you go?

I live in a beautiful part of the world and I get plenty of great surfing and paddling moments within a car ride from home, but if you really push me I’d say anywhere where the water is clear and I could see some more marine life underneath. I am over dark water ALL the time.

Best piece of SUP advice you’ve ever received?

From Larry Cain with Paddle Monster over the last several months as I was training for the 2016 SEA Paddle – work on technique, again and again.

Weirdest thing that’s happened to you while paddling?

I was already wearing a helmet due to brain surgery, and the board hit me right BETWEEN the edge of the helmet and eye brow and gave me a great gash that required 50 stitches.

Favorite SUP nutrition? (During races/ during a long haul)

I follow the Ketogenic diet for therapeutic reasons; to help starve my cancer, and a bonus is that it is amazing for ultra endurance performance.

Goals for this next year?

Since I was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer three years ago I am on a mission to inspire and motivate fellow survivors to incorporate exercise in their healing process. Last year I ran an ultramarathon in the Rockies and climbed 9,000 ft and this year I just completed 26 miles around Manhattan as part of SeaPaddle. I am looking for another endurance event for next summer. You just need to put your mind into it and enjoy the ride.

Favorite post-paddle nosh (snack/beer/recovery drink)

Nut butters, water, avocado, eggs, bulletproof coffee….

Your favorite non-paddle thing to do.

Hang with my wife and two boys.

What piece of SUP gear do you wish someone would invent?

Guarantee shark repellent.

What’s your biggest challenge with SUP?

Build up courage (skills?) to surf bigger and faster waves.

What is your proudest moment in a SUP race or event?

Training for and completing the 2016 SEAPaddle in 5:45 hrs

Tell us about the best friend(s) you made through paddling.

Linda, she was introduced to me after I was diagnosed with cancer and was a great supporters when I started my foundation, later after I decided to participate in the 2016 SEAPaddle she lent me a board so I could start training last winter, and then we trained together frequently on our journey to the event.

What was your best SUP travel trip?

To Tahiti, actually without my SUP but it was a surfing trip onboard the THE CABRINHA QUEST, it was amazing!
