2016 Chattajack Race Results and photos

By all accounts, this year’s 31-mile Chattajack race was the most difficult of the 5 years. Winds in the 15mph range with gusts to 25 seemed to be in our face for most of the race past the 8 mile mark. It seemed mathematically impossible for there to be so much headwind in a course down a meandering river, but there it was, slapping us in the face, hour after hour. Coming around some bends, you could see everyone bunch up like in a log jam and you knew they’d hit the wind. The ripples would rush toward you then it’d hit.

In the words of Tom Hanks playing Jimmy Dugan in A League of Their Own, “It’s supposed to be hard. If it wasn’t hard, everyone would do it. The hard … is what makes it great.”

We’d like to thank Kim and Ben for all the work they did to make this year so special. Thank you to all the volunteers who made registration and check in so smooth, who made the course so safe, and who made the finish so magical. 4Thank you for the moon pies and chocolate milk. Thank you for the cool shirts, finishers medals and stickers. Thank you to the town of Chattanooga who was such a wonderful host to this event.

For those of you who had to stop at the 10 mile cutoff or who couldn’t finish in the allotted time, let it fuel your training for next year. This is both a distance and a time challenge. You can meet this challenge next year with the right preparation. And after some active rest, that means paddling and dry land training. If you registered for Chattajack, you get a free trial of Paddle Monster. SUP, OC, Surfski, or Prone, we can help prepare you for next year. You can do this. #trainingworks. Just contact me and I’ll get you the trial code to sign up.

Extra thanks to Melia who baked 13 dozen chocolate chip cookies for us. Yummm

Congrats to Kim Hilhouse who didn’t break anything on her way to winning the women’s elite and Larry Cain who won his 3rd consecutive Chattajack. Congrats to Harrison Deisroth who crushed the course on an OC-1. Congrats to Anya and Deb who managed to tandem SUP on an inflatable. I don’t know how there was grass left on your skirts after that wind.  And congratulations to everyone who participated, who won or placed in their divisions, and mostly, who started and/or finished. That was truly an accomplishment. It was really fun to hang out and see everyone. Well done.

#Repost @nzhanners ・・・ When I signed up for ChattaJack 2016 on May 1st at midnight with 500+ other yahoos, I was currently still in Knoxville, TN waiting to hear from immigration how much longer I had in the country. By the end of June I was back in New Zealand, in the middle of winter (again) with no board and with a rather expensive decision to make. With a rather unconventional build up for my 3rd ChattaJack, I decided that I was going to back myself for once and just go for it. The 2015 CJ crew knew we were due for an epic adventure and boy, 2016 did not disappoint!! 25mph sustained headwinds, an EPIC downwind adventure and miles of just straight grinding. God moved mountains for me before, during and after this race. What a truely epic way to end this chapter before I really begin my new one in New Zealand. Quick shout out -Team Leeghit: for all the things. I love you guys. @pdlmnstr and @larrycaincanoe all I can say is “training works” whether that is on land or water. @virusintl for making the best clothing to grind out 32miles in. @hammernutrition for nutrition that works. @mhlcustom for the fastest board on the water. A couple favorites from the 2016 #chattajack: This doesn’t begin to fully represent the reunion of friends and creation of new friendships that happen at the CJ but of course some of my Bark family was there. A special shout out to HS senior Emily Bark (prone) for her first ever CJ.. way to go! @nzhanners came all the way back from NZ to join us and she’s going home with a 1st in 14′! @kailuabound came flying through the finish all smiles as she realized this was her year for the top spot in 12’6″ and young Dylan (13) crushed it for his first solo year, also on a 12’6″, AND he won the raffle for a 14′! Congratulations everyone who participated… such an epic challenge! #chattanooga #lovethelifeyoulive #livethelifeyoulove #suprace #sup #weliveforthis #surftechsc
