It seems like every year, the warm fall weather picks one weekend to turn the corner and play winter make-believe. And this year, again, it was the Surf to Sound at the Blockade Runner Beach Resort. The race, organized by the Wrightsville Beach Paddle Club who also organizes the Carolina Cup in April, welcomed paddlers with cold temperatures in the high 40s in the morning and harsh 15-20 mph winds with 2-3 foot surf.In the main event, the Surf To Sound Challenge, paddlers who could break through the surf had a fun downwind (fun for those who know how to downwind) and an incoming tide through the inlet and to the south buoy behind Masonboro Island. Upon turning the buoy, headwinds and current beat paddlers almost to submission for nearly 2 miles back to Masonboro Inlet and a tide-assisted final 1.5 miles to the finish. Despite the cold and wind, the water temperature remained in the low 70s, beckoning paddlers to jump into its warm embrace. Hobie and Carolina Paddleboard Company team rider April Zilg repeated as women’s elite champion and Paddle Monster head coach Quickblade Paddles and Starboard team rider Larry Cain edged out Canadian rival and friend, SIC Team rider Tommy Buday.

Here is the finish of the Surf to Sound Challenge for Larry and April’s wins.

On the Sound side, the OC-6 event showcased boats from the newly formed Wrightsville Beach Outrigger Club who tore up the Harbor Island course. They spent the weekend taking people out on the water and introducing people to outrigger paddling and the club. OC is really taking off in Wrightsville Beach and everyone seemed to be excited to hop in a boat.

On Sunday, the cold wind was replaced by warm sun a perfect day for the flatwater championships and new, experimental 25-mile Kraken. For the Kraken, 4 set out and 3 finished. It was a beautiful day and in the end. Most people who had signed up for the Kraken switched to the 9-mile race after getting fried the day before.
