Harrison Deisroth and the Te Aito

Okay, we here at Mullet Central just have to brag.  We are so, so proud of our own OC Correspondent and Local Boy Harrison Deisroth! As you may have read, he’s been training all summer in Hawaii with the Ka Lahui Kai team and yesterday he competed in his first Te Aito individual va’a race, which is part of the IVF Va’a World Distance Championships in Tahiti. It’s considered one of the most important outrigger races in all of Polynesia if not the world.

Harry did great!!! Here’s what he wrote on his Facebook page:

“First Te Aito is in the books. I’m very stoked and happy to have placed 33rd against some of the best junior paddlers in the world. It was good fun, very hard, and no doubt an experience of a lifetime. I can’t express how grateful I am to have been able to compete in this years race and I hope to be able to come and race again!”

Harrison Deisroth and the Te Aito

He was 33rd out of 102, with a total time of 1:27:51.

Here’s more from his mom, Emily (who is a force in her own right and a major factor in the growth of the OC community in Wrightsville Beach) :

“Some serious competition in an age division above his own. Super proud! He was 2nd paddler from USA to finish! Those Tahitians are amazing. A good step in the right direction for our USA juniors making their way into competitive v1 paddling. Thanks to coaches willing to commit to their development.”

Thursday, the Juniors will compete in the OC6 distance race so Harry will be back at it again. There should be a live stream with Juniors coverage here.

Harrison Deisroth and the Te Aito

Harry is a force.  But more than just being a talented, gifted athlete, he is an amazing role model, a leader and one of the most encouraging and supportive teenagers you will ever meet. We are proud to have him as part of our Mullet ohana.
