Nutrition Review: Laird Superfood Creamers

Laird Superfood Creamers: Surprisingly Good

I didn’t want to like these. When Laird Hamilton and his wife Gabby Reese began marketing these coffee additives, I thought it was kinda gimmicky. And, I have not added cream to my coffee in years. I fancied myself a coffee purist. Why would I put a creamer, a powdered substance no less, in my perfectly brewed cup of Kannapali Peaberry?

This is not your average, yucky instant Coffee Mate non-dairy, partially hydrogenated palm oil coffee abomination.

It’s really good.

Especially the one with turmeric.

I don’t blame Laird. I blame Dave Boehne and Erik Logan Toppenberg.

These guys brought a bag of the stuff, along with the $14 battery operated mini immersion mixer Laird sells on the website, to the Nosara Paddle Surf camp I attended in March. I admit, it was intrigued more by the gadgety hand mixer than anything else. Maybe it was the daily sight of The Brown Blur whirring his cuppa with the blender, and a deadpan face and saying, “Whip it, whip it good” that really hooked me.

I’m such a sucker for a good gadget.

But, after watching Dave and Erik prep their coffees every day,I decided to take a closer look at the label. Here’s the info from the Laird website:

“Contains the following*:

Coconut Milk Powder: Made from freshly squeezed, filtered coconut milk to deliver the exotic flavor and aroma characteristic of fresh coconuts. non-GMO

Dried Organic Coconut Nectar- Made from the fresh sap of the coconut tree that is gently heated to produce a light nutty flavor that isn’t overly sweet along with a hint of coconut aroma. The result is a 100% organic coconut sugar – no fillers here – that has a lower glycemic index than typical sugar.

Aquamin – Derived from 100% red marine algae to deliver a rich source of readily bioavailable calcium.
Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil: Called the “King of Oils” Coconut Oil is extracted from the kernel or meat of mature coconuts. It has a unique combination of fats including medium chain triglycerides (MCT’s).”

I’ve been a fan of the “bulletproof” Paleo coffee – prepared with butter and coconut oil, but I can only do that every so often because of calories and other issues. After perusing the Superfood bag, I seemed this might be a decent alternative. And I have long been an advocate of using Turmeric as much as possible because of it’s known anti-inflammatory properties. The Laird Superfood comes in 8 ounce or 16 ounce packages, in three “flavors” – the original, a cacao flavor and the turmeric. It can also be purchased in single serving packets to take on the go, but in just the original variety.
All flavors are gluten free, non-gmo, vegan and soy free.

I don’t know, but I just feel better when I put this stuff in my morning Joe. I have even mixed the turmeric creamer with warm almond milk for an evening “golden milk” hot toddy before bedtime following hard workout days. I am hooked.

The product line even includes an “instant coffee” which is essentially coffee mixed with the cacao creamer. This was the only disappointment. The Laird Instant Fuel, as it is called, just didn’t have a strong enough coffee flavor. Even when I increased the recommended serving of the powder, it was just weak on the coffee side. If you aren’t expecting a full-on coffee blast, and can think of it more as an alternative to instant cocoa, it’s not bad.

So, even if you are a coffee purist, go ahead and give one of these creamers a shot…you might be surprised.
