Long Beach is the setting for the APP’s first stop

NEWS RELEASE from the APP

The APP World Tour is proud to announce that the New York’s Surfing Capital, the City of Long Beach on Long Island will host the first surfing stop of the 2018 APP World Tour, kicking off the season in style.

In addition, the city will also play host the sprint racing component of the New York SUP Open that follows  the race around the Statue of Liberty in Manhattan, to provide a very complete challenge to the world’s best racers.

“The City of Long Beach is thrilled to host the 2018 Association of Paddle Boarding Professionals World Tour,” said City Council President Anthony Eramo. “Our business and surfing communities welcome this event and are excited to showcase Long Beach as a surfing destination. With our pristine beaches, beautiful boardwalk, great restaurants, and unique shops just 50 minutes from New York City, I’m sure the visitors will love our City by the Sea.”

The event will run from the 18th – 23rd September, with the Sprint Racing to open proceedings on the 18th September, quickly followed by the Open Trials event for Surfing and then the Main Event. The whole event will be broadcast live on www.appworldtour.com

The event will be hosted in front of the Hurley Surf Club powered by Skudin Surf, right off the boardwalk on Riverside Blvd, with a large vendor village lining the sand in conjunction with the Long Beach Chamber of Commerce and facing New York’s premiere surf break.

“We look forward to welcoming the world’s best athletes as part of the APP to experience all that Long Beach has to offer and to watch them showcase their skills in our backyard. It’s an incredible opportunity for our community and an honor to be one of the hosts of this event,” Cliff Skudin of Skudin Surf and Surf for All said.

The Long Beach component of the 2018 New York SUP Open will feature the following principal elements:

Sprint Racing in the Surf (18th September)

The World Tour Sprint Racing will kick off proceedings on the 18th, with a course that runs through the surf to provide both a challenge and a spectacle of high performance standup paddle racing in New York. It will also deliver a completely different competitive challenge around the Statue of Liberty in the Hudson River, testing the world’s best in a complete cross section of conditions.

Open Surf Trials (18th – 23rd September)

This is an open SUP Surfing competition to provide a platform for aspiring athletes and passionate enthusiasts to step up and be counted. It will also provide a qualification point to the big leagues, as the top four athletes in both Men’s and Women’s divisions will advance directly onto the main event.

Main Event: Surf (18th – 23rd September)

This is the official and opening stop for surfing on the APP World Tour for 2018, as the world’s best SUP surfers will congregate in Long Beach to initiate their respective campaigns towards this season’s World Championship crown. Long Beach’s reputation in September for world class waves is renowned and the action will be a spectacle not to be missed. You will be able to watch it all go down LIVE at www.appworldtour.com

Entries are now open for racing at www.newyorksupopen.com and surfing at www.appworldtour.com

Community Paddle Event: support a local charity for the Kids

In addition to the world class competition and in line with the APP World Tour’s commitment to support the local communities it visits, the Long Beach component of the 2018 New York SUP Open will feature an open race that will provide opportunity for everyone to participate and enjoy, regardless of age, fitness or ability.

The goal is to get everybody out on the water and raise awareness and funds to support kids’ initiatives in the community of Long Beach in conjunction with “Surf for All”. Entries for this Open Race will go live soon at www.appworldtour.com
