Hurricane Flo is still with us

Hurricane Florence maybe a memory for most now but not to the folks in Eastern North Carolina still cleaning up after the devastation.  It will be some time before our coastal communities are back to some semblance of “normal.”  We know of several paddlers who won’t be able to make it to Chattajack or other races because of what Flo left them with.

If you want to help, here are some ways you can assist our communities as they rebuild:

Donation Aid Agencies

Want to make sure your money will go where it’s most needed? Check out the Charity Navigator’s  Hurricane Florence page. It offers a list of agencies responding to Flo hurricane relife, such as the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina, the Charleston Animal Society, and All Hands and Hearts Smart Response . and provides basic information on the groups’ backgrounds. If you need more info, the Better Business Bureau has a searchable database of charities which allows you to “vette” them before you donate.  Check it out here.

North Carolina Disaster Relief Fund

The North Carolina’s primary  recovery fund is the NC Disaster Relief Fund. The governor’s office contributions go to any unmet needs of Hurricane Florence victims. It is accepting online donations on its website or mailed to North Carolina Disaster Relief Fund, 20312 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, NC 27699.  Hand in hand with this fund is work being done by the NC Community Fund.   Donations made here will go directly to the communities and people in them who need it most.

Environmental Groups

North Carolina’s coast environment will likely never be the same after Flo.  If you are so inclined, especially if you love paddling in our state, you could consider a donation to any number of our local environmental non-profits such as the North Carolina Coastal Federation  which does great work building a stronger and more resilient coast.  Here’s a list of other environmental non-profits in North Carolina.

Thank you for your help and for continuing to think about us!
