Coach Victoria on Fueling Your Workouts the Right Way

Fueling your Workouts the Right Way! Hello Paddlers!! Can you believe it’s May!!! This part of the year is always interesting. Some of you are coming from a deep freeze, snow and mostly land/cardio training.  Others, like us here in Florida, have...

Safety First – A Primer on How to Get Back to Paddling Safely

How to Get Back To Paddling Safely It’s that time of year -many of us are returning to our favorite paddle spots, so it’s time for a refresher on how to get back to paddling safely.  Last year during the onset of...

As a result of Governor Murphy’s EO banning all special events on the beaches of New Jersey this summer, and guidelines involved with the Cape May Lewes Ferry (no walk on passengers and limited departure schedule), our race committee has decided to change the annual Crossing and Four Mile Rec Paddle to a 14.50 mile circumnavigation of Cape May Island.

There will be SUP 14′ (Male and Female), OC1, Surf Ski, Prone UL, 14′, 12′ and NEW to 2020, the Barrier Watermen-NorthEast 10’6 Division. This event will take place on Sunday August 23 and will start at approximately 1015 at the Fishermen’s Memorial in the Cape May Harbor (Missouri Avenue & Harbor Cove, Cape May). Check in is mandatory by 0900.

There will be on course time limits, which you are required to agree upon, and the entire course MUST be completed in under 3hr30minutes. This is a challenging test in it’s own sense, as you will paddle past the USCG TRA-CEN, the only training center/boot camp facility in the entire country, through the Cold Spring Inlet, over one mile long and home to the third largest commercial fishing fleets on the East Coast, past the USS Atlantus, the world famous sunken concrete ship, and through the Cape May Canal, which was dug by the Army Corp of Engineers in 1942 to reduce the risk of attack by German U-Boats.

DeSatnick Foundation

Attached is the pdf of the race course ( http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=7479586 ), and the entry fee remains the same as previous years, $100 deposit, and and an additional $150 to fundraise for the Desatnick Foundation (total of $250). If you have already started the runsignup registration and fundraising page, GREAT, if not, please go ahead and register ASAP. Please email us if you have not received your unique runsignup.com entry link. Due to the limited race schedule in 2020, completion of this year’s event does NOT guarantee entry into the 2021 Cape to Cape Crossing.

CApe to Cape Race

For all of our paddlers that live in DE, MD, VA, and NC, as of today, the first ferry departure from Cape Henelopen is 0845, which means that you will NOT make the check in or start time. I would encourage you to make arrangements at a local motel (The Boarding House, West Cape Motel, Jersey Cape Motel, Blue Fish Inn).  We are also working on a modified awards/after party, due to capacity limitations, Harry’s will not be hosting the event in 2020. Details to follow as soon as we lock in a plan.

Cape to Cape Challenge

Remember that our mission statement is to emotionally and financially assist those living with paralysis and Spinal Cord Injury in Atlantic, Cape May, Cumberland, Ocean and Monmouth Counties. Our Foundation recently purchased five beach wheel chairs and will be distributing to Ocean Grove, Sea Girt, Belmar and Spring Lake in a few weeks. As one of our long time supporters and Past Champions said to me,

“People are still suffering SCI’s and living with paralysis, we plan to paddle this year…”
