Hovie Comet 14'
Classified Category: Standup Paddle Board
This 14′ Hovie Comet is a fast, fast board. Shaper Brian Hovnanian worked with hydrodynamic engineer and yacht designer Tim Kernan on the Comet and it shows. The slippery water profile does come with the requirement for good balance skills — it’s not a beginner board — but I used it happily on lakes, tidal rivers, and open ocean. Solid, well-built, and handsome.
The board weighs 23.2 lb and is exactly 14 ft long. At its widest point near the handle it is 25 in wide. The rail at that point is 5 1/2 in. At the thickest point of the nose right before it tapers to the footwell the board looks like it’s about 8 1/4 in thick.
The board has a pretty pronounced and continuous rocker. The hull profile goes from a slight vee at entry to a slight concave under the center.
The square tail is 16 in wide.
The center of the finbox is 16 in up from the tail.
The board has an FCS insert 23 1/2 in from the nose, a vent plug just forward of the footwell, and two leash inserts 10 inches from the tail.
The centerline of the handle is 76 1/2 in from the tail / 91 1/2 in. from the nose.
The Comet-branded deck pad is split down the center with side vents to let water drain out measures 64 in in total length. It’s a comfortable platform and you can really move around to different places on the board.
Although the board has an abrasive top deck treatment all the way to 10 in from the tail, I added an OAM New-York-themed and color-coordinated stomp pad to help with pivot turns and surfing.
There’s no indication anywhere of the volume of the board. I’m 6 ft 174 lb and it worked great for me.
It was purchased directly from Zeke’s in Stuart, FL, and always stored in a padded bag. Minimal wear & tear; the FCS mount in the nose was repaired but everything is in great shape.
I’m in New York City and can meet anywhere on Long Island or northern NJ.Price: 800.Address: 158 Mercer St
