CLIF Organic Energy Food Review


There are 4 CLIF Organic Energy Food flavors, 2 sweet and 2 savory.

Sweet: Banana Mango w/ Coconut and Banana Beet w/Ginger

Savory: Sweet Potato w/ Sea Salt and Pizza Margherita

Yes, they look like baby food. Yes, they taste sort of like baby food. BUT, they are made for adults, for endurance training where gels are just too sweet and you crave REAL food. I like real food for long training sessions. A lot. And I’ve tried baby food alternatives along with Portables. There are some great options. When I saw these at the Outdoor Retailer Expo, I was skeptically excited. I sampled all of them and really liked 3 of the 4. I was not a fan of the Pizza Margherita. At all. BUT, it’s all personal preference. I’m sure they did a ton of market research and people enjoyed it. I didn’t. My favorites were the Banana Mango + Coconut and the Sweet Potato w/ Sea Salt.

One other aspect that I really appreciate is the screw cap so you don’t have to eat the entire packet. YOu can reseal it and have another small snack 15 minutes later.

Banana Mango Coconut

I like this one. I used it on my long paddle this week and it was easy on my stomach. It tasted good. It wasn’t too sweet like eating icing. The subtle texture of the coconut made it seem real, as if having something to chew or made it more substantial.

Sweet Potato w/ Sea Salt

This was more savory, but gave me more of a warm feeling. That’s not technical, just an impression. I love sweet potatoes and the sea salt gives it the right amount of personality. Big fan. Not overwhelming. Subtle flavor.

Banana Beet w/Ginger

It’s hard not to rank this second out of the 4. It’s close. There’s a ton of research out there on the benefits of beets. Sometimes they can be a little TOO earthy, but this recipe is a great balance. You can taste the beets and the small kick of ginger. I’ll probably order a box of these.

Pizza Margherita


Sorry. I can’t even talk about this one. I didn’t like the taste and I’m still a little freaked out. It’s like I broke my jaw and they blended a slice of pizza, but more like just eating the sauce straight.
