How to Put your Paddleboard in the Water and Get it Out

So, you just bought a shiny new paddleboard! How do you put it in the water and take it out so that you don't break it? How do you avoid getting a ding (What IS a ding? We'll cover that later.)

How to put your Paddleboard in the Water

Follow these instructions to easily put your board in the water from a dock and take it out from a dock without breaking it.

1. Place your board on the dock with the nose (front of the board) pointing toward the water.

2. Pick your paddleboard up by the leash string at the tail (back) of the board.

3. Holding the tail (back) of the board by the leash string, put the nose of the board in the water. DO NOT LET THE BOTTOM OF THE BOARD HIT THE DOCK AT THIS POINT. (Lexy is very excited about this part!)

4. Walk the board out into the water and lower the tail of the board down to the water (make sure it is clear of the dock!)

5. If you have a leash on, you can hang onto your board with the leash to keep it from floating away.

If there is no leash attached to the board, you can use your paddle to keep the board close to the dock while you get ready to get on it. (This is not the same board. Didja catch that? Hole in the shot list!)

BE CAREFUL OF BOAT CLEATS! They will stick right into your boards!

1. Reach down and grab the leash string at the back of the paddleboard. Lift up the board by the tail.

2. Walk the board out of the water, keeping the board from hitting the dock.

Do not drag the bottom of your board on any surface. Think of it like dragging a baby on pavement. Race boards with scratched bottoms have more drag. Even the bottom of a beater board deserves respect and care. If you have a place where there are dock guards, this works great, but there are nails and all sort of things lurking!

(It is a good idea to, once you can, grab the board and not just the leash string. That way if the string breaks, the board doesn't go crashing to the dock.)

3. Set the board down on the dock, taking care that the fin doesn't slip between cracks in the boards on the dock.

The board should balance without sliding back into the water

4. Pick the board up by its center handle to move it so that it is parallel to the dock, rather than perpendicular (and taking up the entire dock.)

5. Carry the board to a location where it will be out of the way of other people using the dock.

6. Set the board down, bottom side up, out of the way until you can carry it to your car. Keep the bottom side up so that you do not scrape the bottom or break the fin. Putting it bottom side up also discourages kids who might be walking along the dock from jumping up and down on it.

Many thanks to Carolina PaddleBoard Co. and owner Jason for letting us shoot at their dock.

Keep your paddleboard pristine while putting it in the water and taking it out of the water.
