Jac Citera

Joe Paddler: Jac Citera

Where do you SUP the most?

Long Island, NY…primarily on the eastern end and North Fork.

What board do you ride?

Currently and almost exclusively, a BARK Laird.  I also have an Al Merrick (ancient) & JPatterson

JacCiteraWhat paddle do you use?

Kialoa, mel pu’u Shaka

Have you changed boards/paddles since you started? If so, why?

Started with the Merrick and a Kialoa.  Learned to surf this combo and raced it.  Wanted to race more, got the Laird.   Got the Shaka for quicker cadence.

Where would you most like to SUP?

I have no idea, I haven’t SUP’d everywhere yet.

Best piece of SUP advice you’ve gotten?

Stack my shoulders.

Weirdest thing that’s happened to you while SUPping?

I paddled faster than people half my age in a race.  That’s weird.

Favorite SUP nutrition? (During races/ during a long haul)

Bananas when racing-they taste the same going up as going down. Pizza and Beer for the long haul ( I am not doing a lot of distance these days but there’s never a bad time for Pizza and Beer.)

Goals for 2015 – and did you accomplish them?

Truth-I had none.  I was in so much pain the early part of this year, I didn’t know I would paddle any more.  Then I signed onto the 100/100 POGO.  I didn’t know when I started whether I would make it but I did, so there’s that.

Favorite post-paddle nosh (snack/beer/recovery drink)

What piece of SUP gear do you wish someone would invent?

I have this idea for paddling pants that flair out on the legs when going downwind.
(Mullet commentary: I believe they are called bellbottoms)

What’s your biggest challenge with SUP?

Long distances confustigate me…I lose focus too easy, oh look, butterfly!

What is your proudest moment in a SUP race or event?

Winning my division and getting a certificate signed by Laird.
