Meet Joe Paddler: Kevin Seall, Columbus, Ohio

Where you were born and where you live now?

I was born in Circleville, Ohio (home of the famous Pumpkin Show! Woot!) and I currently live in Columbus, Ohio (Home of the Buckeyes and White Castle!)

What is your occupation?

I drive a Semi for UPS ( and no.. I dont know what happened to your package, lol) I have also been a certified SUP instructor for the last several years with my mobile operation ” Lost Coast SUP” GET Lost! w/ Lost Coast! 😉

Where do you SUP the most?

Local lakes, rivers, creeks, reservoirs , or wherever I happen to be racing on the weekend.

Do you have a favorite local paddleboard shop?

Well .. It is the Midwest so my options are limited, lol.. But a friend of mine has a shop in Columbus called the Outdoor Source… and I have some friends in Cleveland that have a great shop called Nalu SUP and Surf that I try to stop at when I’m up that way.

What paddleboard, surfski or OC do you ride most?

Honestly I usually just hop on one of my Riviera Soft Tops from my quiver that I teach on lol… I’ve even raced surf class on it from time to time.. it’s fun to play on… either that or my Bark Dominator.

Do you own any other paddleboards, surfskis or OCs and what kind?

My first board.. which is a Jimmy Lewis 10’6″ Cruise Control…and the board I have raced on the last four years is a Bark Dominator. I also have a Surf Tech B1 and six 11’6″ Riviera Soft Tops that I use for instruction… oh yeah.. and I have sweet retro beat up short board that I’ve taken to concerts on occasion to get signed LOL… so far the Band Fishbone all signed it!

What paddle do you use?

I race with a Quickblade Elite Race Paddle.. and goof off with a Jimmy Lewis Paddle (actually also made by Quick Blade)

Have you changed boards/paddles/equipment since you started? If so, why?

Heck no I’m broke!! LOL.. But seriously though.. I’ve been wanting to move on from my Dominator because honestly I’m kinda weary of the hump in the middle, lol.. it’s been a great board… I’ve been eyeing several brands .. especially the new Infinity line… those are some sweet designs! And as far as my paddle… I really like Quickblade but my model is too big of a blade and I’m thinking I want to go shorter as well.. so I’m considering a V-drive or Possibly the Trifecta.. (well, as soon as I hit the Lotto, lol )

If you could travel to anywhere in the world to paddle, where would you go?

Somewhere with CLEAN water… of course Bora Bora would be nice.. but there are so many places in our own country that I haven’t been to that would do me just fine  i.e. Tahoe… Canyons out west.. Colorado.. etc.. etc..

Best piece of SUP advice you’ve ever received?

Don’t buy one from Wal-Mart? lol…. no umm… I guess buying a stable board that you are confident on so that way you can hammer out a great stroke. I mean, it’s hard to enjoy a casual paddle or race when 75% or more of your time is just trying to stay on the board!

Weirdest thing that’s happened to you while paddling?

I’m glad you asked this question… and after giving it much thought.. I have come to the conclusion that I AM THE WEIRDEST thing that has happened while paddling!! LOL!!… be it my leopard print boardshorts that I frequently race in, or showing up at a casual group paddle wearing a snorkel , flippers, a pool float and water wings, or maybe when I wore a full chicken suit while racing in white water….yeah… I’m definiately the weirdest thing to happen!

Favorite SUP nutrition? (During races/ during a long haul)

Coffee , maybe a banana and a Kind bar, I’ve even stopped en route to a race and grabbed one of those small packets of turkey at a Speedway LOl… and chugging a lot of water.

Goals for this year?

I want to train over the winter and get stronger shoulders… maybe save for my next whitewater outfit? Im thinking Stormtrooper? Dreads?

Favorite post-paddle nosh (snack/beer/recovery drink)

Fish Tacos and Margaritas of course!! Next

Your favorite non-paddle thing to do?

Listen to music… Play my congas and bongos.. freaking out my cat…. Taking off on my Harley in no particular direction.. well… maybe to the cantina..yeah.. riding my new longboard from Detroit Paddle Surf Co.

What piece of SUP gear do you wish someone would invent?

A small sup trailer to pull behind my Harley… or a paddle through carry out?

What’s your biggest challenge with SUP?

Everything is so expensive for one, lol… secondly lack of sleep lol… In my five years of racing I haven’t slept before any race I have been in … no joke.. I work second shift during the week and all the races are usually on sat morning or so far that I just don’t have time to sleep.. so I work all night.. drive to the race in the morning.. do however many miles for the race ..and drive back home.. LOL… I would prob be dangerous in a race with sleep.

What is your proudest moment in a SUP race or event?

Finishing a SUP-Cross style race with white water features and drops … In a full chicken suit?.. well.. actually that probably goes back to me being the weirdest thing to happen while SUP’ing… sigh good times.

Tell us about the best friend(s) you made through paddling.

My therapist? lol..sorry … I’ve met soo many awesome people in the last several years from SUP..but two people stand out the most, and that would be Joy Vogelsong and Tony Cea…Their stoke is pretty contagious and we always have a lot of laughs together and they are some of the most supportive thoughtful people I know…oh.. and also my friend Renee Dunlap… She just started her SUP journey not too long ago and is also an instructor as well as a yogi, and her passion for the sport reminds me of why I went down this crazy path in the first place.  Oh my goodness I can’t believe I almost forgot…Judy Spieldenner! Or ” off duty Judy ” as I like to call her .. yep… those are my homies!!

What was your best SUP travel trip?

Well the crazy thing is…one of my best SUP related trips wasn’t even on the water lol! Last October a concert promoter in Zanesville, Ohio heard that I had several boards and told me that the road manager for The Beach boys had inquired him about the availability of any surfboards that they could use as stage props for that show coming up and I was like.. umm.. yeah I have a trailer full, lol!! And he was like that’s awesome! Can you be here tomorrow to set them up on the stage once the their buses get here?? After I picked my jaw up off the floor I was like Hell yes!! LOL… so I hooked my trailer of SUP boards and drove to the venue.. it was surreal!! They even let me put my Jimmy Lewis Board (my first) in front of the drum riser! I even took my 78 year old mother, as a gift to her, as she took me to my first Beach Boys show when I was a little boy, so I didn’t tell her where we were going .. or that I was going to introduce her to Mike Love ( the lead singer) a once in a life time opportunity that neither of us will soon forget!

And as far as a water-related trip.. well.. Maui… and O.A.B.I. OF COURSE!! 🙂
